Why does digital learning matter?

Digital learning matters because people matter, and the planet matters, and digital technology (including AI) is impacting both people and the planet, in ways that aren't always visible. The book and workshops which this website promotes examine the impact of digital technology on learning, through the lens of sustainability.

 

Exploring the intersection of learning, digital technology and sustainability, ‘Digital Learning Matters’ identifies the wide range of ways in which digital technology frames and constrains learning, highlighting the critical questions we should be asking if we work in the learning industry, work with learners, or are learners ourselves.

There has been a 900% increase in online learning since 2000 with companies and organisations using digital learning to fulfil a wide range of learning and professional development needs. Universities are offering online courses and modules. People are working in hybrid environments, attending online meetings and communicating through digital apps. 

​​

Learning, for people, is embodied, it is social, it is emotional and cognitive, and most importantly is an experience that shapes how we live our lives, it shapes the decisions we make and what we do, that’s the learning that matters. AI may have a role to play but it is the human experience of learning and how digital technology and AI impacts that, that is the focus here.   

​

Workplace learning happens in digital spaces and digital technology is embedded in the wider systems we operate in; in work, in politics, in democracy, in services, in education, in sports and in so many aspects of our lifestyles. What is the real impact of this? Digital technology offers access to learning that hasn’t been previously available but with that increased access what is lost? What changes? And what matters?

  • Digital technology and AI are having an environmental impact (but not everyone wants to acknowledge it)

  • Using digital technology impacts peoples social, emotional and physical wellbeing (both positively and negatively)

  • Workplaces are changing (or have changed) as they become digitised and workplace learning is increasingly provided and experienced online
